Video: Welcome to Utah

Our trip to Rampage started with… waiting. Lots and lots of waiting. After we packed our bags we went to Landry’s house and waited. Some half hour later we were on our way and pumped! After the already-getting-bored two hour drive to the border we started our next wait. Kevin had to check in his camera so my dad and I took a 45 minute pee break in the Duty Free. Finally, out of Duty Free and on the road… for about 45 seconds. Oh great, the border. We’re 3 long haired greaseballs going mountain biking in Utah, taking a stop in Las Vegas. Prepared for the worst, we scooted to the front of the line. Amazingly, he let us through! Miracles do happen! After a brief celebration, we get bored, again. Time for the longest wait of them all.

That night was a long one. Dad and Kevin were rotating drivers through the night, and I’m cursed with having a hard time falling asleep in cars. But time flies, and 24… um… 26 nonstop hours of driving later, we’re in Vegas! 1 van, 1 3-foot long bearded dude, 12 ridiculously hot chicken wings, and a pile of grip gear later, we’re on the road, again, again, again. Now our finally complete band of misfits are heading to do what we came here to do: watch Rampage, shoot an edit, and eat a load of In and Out Burgers.

It was amazing to watch Rampage for the second time. My dad knows some people at RedBull, so I had a staff pass. With a staff pass you can eat free lunch and get free water, which was obviously awesome. The first set of qualies was crazy. Aggy’s bails, Bourdo ripping his sleeves off, everything. The next day was the great thunderstorm. You needed to be there to understand, it was literally the heaviest rain I’ve ever seen. You wanted to go out there and get drenched for fun, but you wouldn’t over fear of getting hit by lightning. Luckily, the rain storm made the dirt beautiful for contest day. After some brief fixing of take-offs, the riders were ready. It was time for Rampage!

The contest was crazy and doesn’t need any explaining because everyone probably watched it on television or here on Pinkbike. It was a great experience. After the contest was when the magic happened, though… it was game on filming. The weather was beautiful and the conditions on the trails still weren’t too dusty. We were filming at lots of super cool places such as the old old Rampage site and found lots of beautiful drops. When we were about to hit them, sadly, the wind came. Now we had a decision to make: to go to our next location, Green River, or shoot this money booter and wait out the wind without having time to go to Green River. To make a long story short, after an hour detour thanks to forgotten camera batteries later, we were on the road.

After a night at a hotel, we hit the road to Green River. Somewhere during the drive we found an area a lot like Green River. There was an insane ridge with a chute, to a hard right corner that was insane! We were just about to shoot it when the sun set. Something to look forward to, I guess.

The next day we woke up nice and early and head straight for the desert. Our first shot was the “Blue Castle.” After that we headed over to a jump and did some whips and such. That was basically the end of our riding trip to Utah.

Remember at the start this when I talked about the 26 hour wait to Las Vegas? Now I realize 26 hours isn’t such a long time after all. I had a bunch of perfect drops and a never-before-ridden zone waiting for me all the way in Utah, and you know how long I have to wait? About a year. But sometimes, you just have to wait for the good things in life. And that was my Utah trip.

This story ends as it began - waiting.

Just when I thought I felt good about my riding....

@Sean-MacPhail Can´t agree more... i think these video are out there just to make us feel bad, a little kid is shredding big jumps, bigger than i ever ride on and he is still alive. Some days ago i was done with a big jump that i was digging a whole week on and i wanted to test it, then i broke my collarbone so now i have to wait 3 months untill i can ride and i thought "maybe its the jump it was too big" but after seeing this that jump is just so small and i didnt make it! but this kid he his just a pro "this is just some normal jumps i ride on"... this made my day!, im 16 btw...

Bro, I feel like such a B*tch. Like really, I am almost upset this was posted. Mad props though! Naturally a beast.
  • 10 1
You should feel good about your riding! This kid might be the next Semenuk, which means he's one of 6 billion. You are also one of 6 billion, just a different one. Not better, not worse, just different. We're all bikers, just keep pedaling and ALWAYS feel good about riding.
  • 1 0
Yea you are right bro! @paildiggity but still this kid just ruin everything haha! xD
good luck with your riding mate!
  • 2 0
Didn't know Bourdon had kids in Utah.
  • 1 0
not to rag on the kid or anything cause realistically he is very talented but at that age 99% of that skill is due to the parents. pushing and supporting consistently, not to mention the financial support. most of us can only dream of riding utah, living in squamish and riding whistler all the time but for some its a reality and the skills gained just from being in those places are priceless. again i think the kid has a real future, I'm just jealous my parents weren't that cool!

A great rider at 12. Something no one else noticed though, is how well written this article is. Great rider, great writer, you have a long promising career ahead of you!
  • 3 0
LMFAO, I thought I was gonna be the first one to post a comment about how the article was written. I was even gonna go on a rant about our education system & shit like that, but since I'm 3 days late, meh, fvck it. Ya done beat me fair & square. Smile I'm a little behind on my PBin' & just catchin' up. :/

IDK what I's more impressed with, a 12 year old kid that rides a bike better than most adults, or a 12 year old kid that spells & punctuates better than most adults. O.O
  • 22 3
 seriously?? 12 freaking years old??
  • 43 0
Maybe its a typo and he's actually a 21-year-old relative of Robbie Bourdon?
  • 2 1
 That was funny!
  • 7 0
Yeah I thought I saw that too... then I figured I must just be drunk at work... makes far more sense than the video...

no ma arvan ta väiksest peale sõitnud või noh,väiksemast peal sõitnud.ise olen 14 ja tõmban vaevu whippi ära Big Grin
  • 1 0
@MTBseal oluline on täpsustada, kas lihtsalt whippi või talwhippi? Wink aga ära muretse, ma olen 26 ja oskan ainult otse mäest alla sõita

The question is .. What happened to the DVO sponsorship ?!

"DVOSuspension (Oct 10, 2013 at 21:45)
This young ripper has a DVO sponsorship if he wants it! Email Ronnie!"
  • 27 0
 Maybe he didnt want it???
  • 10 0
 My thoughts exactly...
  • 4 1
It's probably because DVO didn't have their single crown fork back then. Being a smaller rider, it looks like he prefers a smaller frame with a single crown rather than a full downhill rig with a dual crown fork.

This was not nearly as good as some of the segments from NWD or any other older Utah videos with guys like The Claw.
  • 29 0
Yeah but when the Claw started riding this kid was still a swimmer in his dad's nutsack. Gotta give the kid a chance, I wasn't riding like that aged 12. Hell I'm still not riding like that and I'm 34.
  • 32 0
I agree, Hardtailhucker! Personally I feel comparing the skills of the best freeriders in our sport to that of a 12-year-old is completely fair and reasonable.

Age doesn't matter Kyle Strait won Redbull Rampage when he was 14. He was competing against the best riders and Won. p.s. I'm seventeen myself and can better than 90% of the local riders and they've been riding 10-15 years longer than me.
  • 19 1
Yeah man, you're totally right. Age doesn't matter when you're a biking prodigy and possibly the best all around rider in the the short history of this sport. Hell, you're 16 and you're better than most riders who are older than you. That's a fact. No other factors like what kind of access to riding and gear they had growing up, or older fellas not sending it as much due to previous injuries and/or because they actually have to pay for their health insurance/medical bills, or have other responsibilities that are more important.... nope, doesn't matter at all. You're just that good of a rider. Art Barn should come to film you instead of wasting their time on this kid who is not nearly as good as Berrecloth.

Maybe they should come film me.
  • 13 0
I hope they do film you so when your video comes out you have another muppet 4 years older than you going on about he's better than you are. Unlike you, he will probably be right.
  • 3 0
He is sponsored by FOX SHOX, which makes sense seeing as how his bike uses off-sizes
  • 2 1
I'd film for you. As long as a phone edit will doSmile

I mean a real film maker no offense.
  • 17 0
The best way to get people to film you and have companies sponsor you is to have a good attitude, @hardtailhucker03.
  • 10 0
^this. you're only as good as how you represent yourself. nice words and congrats for the younger ripper woulda been a better way to go.
  • 14 0
^ Especially considering that little ripper is immensely better than the kid talking trash.

Don't get me wrong He's good for his age, I'm just saying there's a lot of great terrain in Utah and I feel the could have picked better locations to shoot. My apologies to everyone I offended. Also I'm working on getting a sponsorship currently. @scott-townes How can you say He is better than me? You've never seen me ride, and my profile is not up to date with videos if that's what you were basing your comment on.
  • 10 1
Your last video was back in November and you're nowhere near as good as this kid. And that is an understatement.
  • 5 2
You are 17 and you still have no sponsorship?! God, how lame are you? lol
  • 7 0
 The hole... its getting deeper...

On another note, how long until this kid is competing at Rampage? I'll give it another 5 years.
  • 5 0
@HH03- yes, you are probably very good. You could probably blow lots of people away but if you came across a little more humble some people might take you a bit more serious especially a sponsor. You are ripping on a 12 year old kid for his line choices on big terrain. Damn give him time. One of the best things I love about this sport is how humble and down to earth of all the pro riders seem to be. What I don't like about this sport are the arrogant amateurs who think they are better than everyone because they have the same bikes and components the pro's use. Stay true to the sport young man and a little less attitude and you will be right where you need to be.

Maybe. Or maybe I'll be competing against him there. I can only dream right now, but one day I will make it.
  • 8 0
Nothing wrong with chasing your dream. There is a difference between confidence and arrogance. Finding it might make your posts a bit more tolerable. Keep ripping though.
  • 9 3
 @HardtailHucker03
No offense, but I recommend that you take an autism screening test. You're displaying symptoms consistent with autism spectrum disorder.
  • 7 1
I pray that @HardtailHucker03 does not get the chance to represent a company via sponsorship.
  • 8 0
 @HardtailHucker03 buddy you suck mcnuggets
  • 10 2
 Two thoughts:

1. Awesome vid. Makes me wonder who will win an FMB Diamond event first, Seth or Jackson.

2. People think it is expensive to help your kid get to the next level in sports like hockey… think of how much the family put into making that edit happen for their kid.
  • 2 0
Yeah I would have have loved that when I was his age!

Riding was good, bike was beautiful and so was editing- liked the work with the logos at the beginning- it was pretty cool!

old people* wasting their precious breath. the future is now, and we are from the past. a twelve-year-old skateboard girl did a mctwist last year. deal with it, or don't. we are inconsequential.

*anyone over the age of 23

Great video and write up. This kid is amazing. He is doing the biggest drops and gaps that I have ever seen done with a single crown fork and he is making it look easy. Him and Jackson are redefining our sport.
  • 1 0
Exactly why rip into that little kid, ONLY 12 and maybe another 5 years of knowledge and experience from riders who will pass on expierence to the lil ripper and maybe some of us who slagged him off will be eating there words when he is fully sponsored and standing on the podiums with with the likes of gwin and gee and hill oldies stepping aside for this young un!!!!! Great riding and great video kid, keep up the hard work and teach me too whip like that!!!! lol

Too many comments to read, did anyone else notice that the camera angles were almost shot for shot for NWD and Kranked segments?
  • 1 0
 Thanks..... I think.....
  • 2 0
I thought it was cool. Kind of like a kid living out a dream. That was the direction of my comment.
  • 1 0
I don't have a favorite side in the banter that I just finished reading but, that'd be hilarious if 2 years from now, Seth Sherlock beat HardtailHucker03 at Rampage, but still came in second to the 12 year old McTwist girl riding a 29'er while being sponsored by OLD NAVY! LOL

there's like 50 kids in the world like this when i was 12 (im 14 now) i wish i had a bike like that but business wise it just doesn't make sense
  • 1 0
You are wrong about the market. The high end 16" and 20" wheeled MTB companies can't keep bikes in stock. The demand is huge. Spaw, Cleary, and others are meeting a need unmet by the big companies.
My shop is trying to get some in stock, but there are none left. I am hoping that changes soon. We are bringing in my daughter's bike as a sample for my boss since the company has nothing left to show.
